Head this Summer to Cumbria’s Tranquil East

With plenty of the school summer holidays remaining and there’s also plenty still to do, see and explore when visiting Cumbria and the Lake District National Park.

Have you thought about venturing to the east of the county? It’s home to Penrith, Orton, Shap and Kendal, all easily accessed from the M6 yet minutes away from the South and Central Lakes and within touching distance of the North Pennines giving visitors the best of both counties.

It truly is a family friendly destination with quiet lanes if you’re a cycling family, plenty of none scary walking routes for small, fell walking novices and also lots of activities and attractions when it’s a little damp, well worth bearing in mind for a staycation.

eden valley accommodation

If walking means a complete get away from it all then the area surrounding Haweswater Reservoir is ideal. This year is does look different to the photos however due to the record lack of rain experienced in Cumbria. This is not to say this area is without any passes by for Wainwright’s Coast to Coast walk follows the northern shores of this body of water. What can be said is this far eastern area of the Lake District National Park is more of a place for solitude than many others.

It is great to see so many visitors walking, wandering and cycling around the Lake District National Park and Cumbria now but when, for whatever reason, peacefulness is required then there are still plenty of areas to visit in this, the largest in land mass of the counties and one of the lowest in terms of population.

For Wainwright fell baggers then Haweswater is a starting point of place to pass through to go up many of his 214 fells including those of High Street and the Ullswater fells so too the Kentmere Horseshoe to the south. But what always astonishes people when they visit Haweswater either by the reservoir or venturing up the fells are the views. So those can be seen towards Ullswater, down to the Kentmere Valley and Staveley and across to the Howgills.

So try the stunning East Cumbria this year, Haweswater and across to the Eden Valley. A full guide to the area including accommodation and attractions can be found on the new Website All of The Lake District here https://www.allofthelakedistrict.co.uk/eden-valley/

Head to Bowness and beat those Bank Holiday blues

Well, the last Bank Holiday before Christmas has just passed and we are not meaning that to sound in any way depressing. This is just a little nudge for those whom this event has sprung up on and that have no plans. This Bank Holiday more than any shouldn’t be wasted. There isn’t any point in leaving it until the last minute to see what the weather is doing, it’s Britain. Take the Lakes by the horn and get somewhere booked and quick.

Having been included in the Lonely Planet 2015 Ultimate Travel 500 top sights list and other huge world travel compilations in the last 12 months, the Lake District is obviously hitting the right note with travellers worldwide. Facilities are increasing and getting bigger and better, the travel network expanding and areas such as Windermere with some of the best places to stay in the whole of the UK along with an ever growing restaurant industry and nearby Cartmel being the home, for yet another year, of the UK’s number 1 eatery, L’Enclume.

The bustling areas of Windermere and Bowness make for great September weekend away. Plenty to see and do whatever the weather, cruises, rowing boats, cycling, walking and the ability to never dine in the same place twice with the huge choice of bars and restaurants.

For Cartmel village and in fact the Cumbrian and Lake District food industry as a whole, having this accolade within a far northern county normally only associated with fells and lakes is an even bigger deal. With L‘Enclume being crowned Britain’s best restaurant for a fourth year, this has put the region on the global map and fully cemented it as foodie destination.

Since the first number one slat this Cartmel restaurant secured there has been a number of movers in the top 5 with Restaurant Nathan Outlaw at Rock in Cornwall moving to second and Restaurant Sat Bains, Nottingham in at third, a great display of the quality of Great British chefs, cooking and produce.

The Continuing Rise of the Lake District Mini Moon

windermere hotel for mini moons
For various reasons the word mini moon is cropping up and being mentioned more and more. Once thought to be a faddy saying that would come and go is now the buzz word for brides to be.
For some, a mini moon is an appropriate title for those who either don’t have the time for a full honeymoon or perhaps not the money to. A couple of days away is still marking to occasion. The growing trend now though is to have a mini moon straight after the wedding, not too far from home and then the full honeymoon taken a month or so later.

Jetting straight off on honeymoon after the wedding day is pretty full on. Not only is it something else to think about, the travelling to the airport, making sure bags are packed etc, but it doesn’t give the bride and groom chance to take everything in that has occurred over the past 24 hours. This is one of the most special of days to cherish and savour and goes by far too quickly as it is. The following day can then be a chance to gather thoughts and meet up with friends and relatives as so many travel from afar these days.

But it is a lovely thing to be able to spend some quality time together, the first as a partnership and this is where a mini moon is an excellent way in which to do so. If the word mini moon is baffling, it is basically a short break but mini moon sounds so much nicer!

The Applegarth Villa Hotel in Windermere has definitely noticed a rise in couples staying for a short break after their wedding. The chance to get away from it all, especially in a location as romantic as the Lake District, is a lovely way to start marriage. For a spot of luxury in extremely peaceful surroundings Applegarth Villa Hotel is the choice and has a no children policy. The seven brand new hot tub suites mean you don’t even need to leave your room.

There are so many places to choose from for a mini moon but the romanticism of the Lake District suits this occasion perfectly, it has been voted the most romantic destination in the UK after all.
